Andy McHale
Andrew brings over 20 years of teaching and pastoral care experience to Tombolo Academy, having devoted his career to supporting vulnerable learners and helping them overcome complex barriers to education. Spending two decades in UK secondary education—much of it in middle and senior leadership—he has focused on creating calm, structured, and compassionate environments across both the classroom and the whole school. Andrew’s extensive work with challenging, neurodivergent, and trauma-impacted young people (including those with ASD, ADHD, Cared For and SEMH needs) is grounded in a reassuring demeanour and a strong commitment to emotional regulation, ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and understood.
At the heart of Andrew’s practice is a focus on genuine relationship building. He believes that young people thrive when they feel truly seen and supported, and he works closely and transparently with parents to build strong, trusted partnerships. By collaborating with families, Andrew aims to unlock each student’s unique strengths, guiding pupils to reach their full personal and academic potential, whatever that path looks like for them.
In the classroom, Andrew is a confident, passionate and enthusiastic teacher who uses adaptive teaching strategies to inspire curiosity and scaffold success for every learner. Having recently relocated to Melbourne, he is genuinely excited to join the Tombolo Academy team and is looking forward to making a positive difference in the lives of its students. Outside of school, Andrew is a lifelong Manchester City supporter, an avid walker, and a devoted father who loves spending quality time with his family.
