Fostering Resilience

Sep 15, 2025

At Tombolo Academy, we recognise that resilience is one of the most crucial life skills our students can cultivate. Research shows that resilience is closely linked to improved mental health, stronger academic performance, and better problem-solving skills.

Students who develop resilience are more likely to persevere through challenges, adapt positively to change, and recover from setbacks. These are not just skills for school; they are essential life skills. Learn more about our approach to student growth.

Learning Through Extra-Curricular Activities

To prepare students for life outside of school, where they will face challenges that cannot always be avoided, we offer numerous extra-curricular activities throughout the year. Incursions, excursions, and camps are an important part of the journey, providing a safe and supportive environment for students to step outside their comfort zones, work as part of a team, and experience the satisfaction of overcoming difficulties.

Term 3 Highlights

In Term 3, our students have enjoyed experiences such as:

  • Go-karting
  • Shopping
  • Trampolining
  • Circus skills
  • Bowling

A highlight was our 3-day camp at The Briars on the Mornington Peninsula, where students participated in ropes courses, archery, games, and exploring the outdoors by torchlight. For many students, being away from home and sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings required bravery and a spirit of adventure. These experiences offered a chance to grow, connect, and discover new strengths.

Inspiring Guest Speakers

We were also thrilled to welcome inspirational speaker Mike Rolls to Tombolo Academy this term. Mike faced a long journey of recovery after contracting Meningococcal Septicemia, which resulted in severe internal and external injuries and multiple amputations.

Mike delivered a truly inspiring resilience workshop, teaching practical strategies that empower students to bounce back from challenges, build self-belief, and embrace growth.

Skills for Life

These extra-curricular experiences are vital for our students to build confidence and coping strategies that can be transferred back into the classroom and everyday life. These skills are an essential part of each student’s growth and preparation for the future.

We are proud to see our students participate in new challenges with enthusiasm, and to help them develop resilience, confidence, and independence. Learn more about our approach on our About Us page.
