The Tombolo Academy team had a wonderful opportunity to volunteer recently for OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue organisation.
OzHarvest collects quality surplus food from more than 3,500 donors, including supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, hotels, and farms, and delivers it to over 1,300 charities that support people in need. OzHarvest also runs education programs and sustainability initiatives to raise awareness and inspire action on food waste, food security and climate change.
We participated in the Cooking for a Cause program, one way that OzHarvest engages the community and corporate groups in their mission. The program involves preparing and cooking delicious and nutritious meals using rescued food in a commercial kitchen under the guidance of an OzHarvest chef. The meals are then packaged and distributed to local charities that provide food relief to vulnerable people.
The Tombolo Academy staff had a great time working together as a team, learning new skills and recipes, and making a positive difference in the lives of others. We made 120 meals in total, consisting of Cauliflower Curry and Naan Bread, and Pumpkin Malfatta. The staff were amazed by the variety and quality of the food that would have otherwise gone to waste. We also learned some tips on how to reduce food waste at home and at school.
For our high performing team this was a great opportunity to collaborate away from school, connect with each other and further invest in our team culture.
The team would like to thank OzHarvest for this rewarding and meaningful experience, we are are proud to support OzHarvest’s vision of nourishing our country by stopping good food from going to waste and delivering it to people who need it most.
We encourage everyone to get involved with OzHarvest by donating food, money or time, or by hosting a fundraising event. To find out more about OzHarvest and how you can help, visit their website at ozharvest.org.
